A Day Without Immigrants

Happy Labour Day! I know most of you are at home relaxing on your day off; but, not us in the good old U. S. of A. It's interesting that the day itself commemorates something that happened in the U.S.A. in the 1800s, yet they don't celebrate it. Actually, I err: they do celebrate it - just in September.

Today is also "A Day Without Immigrants" here in the U.S. Millions of immigrant workers are expected to boycott work, school and businesses in order to show the government how much immigrants matter to the economy. I haven't formulated my final thoughts on this, so I shall comment later. You, however, are free to comment at length.

I am fully aware of this situation because I have a deep affinity for Mexico. It goes beyond my Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna obssession...really it does. Mexico is such a beautiful country, and having seen the documentary on 60 Minutes about the wall at the border, and now more people are dying trying to get in to America, etc. plus signed a few petitions raised by Oxfam and some other NGOs...I am a bit surprised the immigrants (and I know that they aren't all from Mexico...but I chose that as my example) took so long to make a stand, take some visible steps to display their disgust at the treatment...Sometimes America seems to forget it was "built" on immigrants (who decided to plunder and get rid of the Natives already living there)..and while I am not in favour of illegal immigration, the majority of research polls done have shown that the majority of Mexicans that come and work in the US, save money, send back home, and return home within a 2-5 yr period...(of course these polls could be biased since they are done by the NGO perspective...)

*sigh* Anyways...I could go on and on and I am better at doing this verbally...so excuse the mambo jumbo...just add some salsa...

The Big Bad America has spoken...

I don't think Americans have forgotten this country was built on immigrants. Many of the Americans that I have spoken with have absolutely no problem with immigrants coming into the country legally. What they do have a problem with, is when people come here illegally, and then use resources as their own while not contributing to the "general pot" (i.e. taxes, social security, etc). Granted, if the government had their priorities correct when it comes to the use of the taxpayers money, this might not be too much of a problem.
